We often get asked what the difference is between Facebook Posts and Facebook Ads so we’ll take you through a few examples to explain the differences.
We’d recommend all businesses use a mix of both, but there’s certainly a clear winner when you need to reach and engage new audiences.
THE FACTS:
- Facebook only shows your posts to an average of 10% of your most engaged fans (organically – on it’s own, without any ad spend).
- These fans are generally the same fans and more than often consist of former clients, family and friends, being the most consistently engaging.
- At the end of the day, Facebook is a giant ad platform (last year they made just under USD $40 billion from ads). So, it makes sense that they make us pay for ads.
- A bit of ad spend and some very well targeted and optimised campaigns can really get your ads in front of the right people.
EXAMPLES OF FACEBOOK POSTS WITHOUT AD CAMPAIGNS

NOW LET’S HAVE A LOOK AT SOME FACEBOOK AD CAMPAIGNS
- Notice the differences in organic reach vs paid reach.

POSTS VS SPONSORED POSTS (ADS)
POST

AD

MAIN ADVANTAGES OF ADS:
- They don’t have to be posted on your page – This means we can split test different ad creative without posting on your page.
- The ability to split test multiple target audiences which can be optimised to get the best results for your ad spend.
- Ad campaigns have a range of objectives, including link clicks, video views, engagement, leads, etc.
- Carousel options for multiple products in the same ad.
- Fully customisable ad images, unlike posts.
BOOSTED POSTS VS ADS:
- Don’t waste money on boosted posts – They have limited targeting options that can’t be changed.
- Ads allow targeting and ad creative to be tweaked at any time, giving you the best return for your ad spend.
- Boosted posts are only for post engagement – Ads offer so much more (Link clicks and leads are what we’re after most of all).
- With boosted posts, you can’t split test ads or audiences – You’re stuck with the basics.
